Ambassadors - East Midlands
A special thanks to all our Ambassadors and to the host organisations who have been absolutely superb with their support and help in making it such a success. With over 70 delegates attending and a further 45 booked the places are going rapidly. Hopefully we will be in a strong position to celebrate some inspirational winners later this year!
Apprenticeships in the East Midlands - Excellent
Response!
Apprenticeship Grants to Employers for 16 and 17 year olds
The above initiative provides £2,500 grants to employers as an incentive to recruit unemployed 16 or 17 year olds on an Apprenticeship up to 31st March 2010.
The response from employers in the East Midlands has been excellent with over 350 new apprenticeship vacancies that have been created over the last 3 weeks in the region. Businesses and Organisations along with Training Providers have worked in partnership with the National Apprenticeship Services staff to promote these employer vacancies to young people and I am sure that this will jointly have made a real impact on reducing the number of young people not in education, employment or training.

Prisoners Train for Tool Trade with
Travis Perkins
A builder's merchant is training prisoners to repair and maintain its tools.
With a turnover of £3 billion, the Travis Perkins group is one of the UK's biggest builders' merchants and home improvement retailers. The group has a 200 year heritage and owns seven businesses, including Keyline and Wickes.
The group operates Tool Hire from many of its Travis Perkins and Keyline branches. Two years ago, the company formed a partnership with Stocken Prison in Rutland.
The idea was to train prisoners at Stocken to repair and refurbish the tools that Travis Perkins hires out to its customers. The prison was looking for business partners to help it develop a skills and work ethos amongst its 800 prisoners.
It wanted to give its inmates more useful out-of-cell activity time, offer qualifications that would give them a better chance of finding a job once released, and raise funds to contribute to the cost of imprisonment.
