Ambassadors - East Midlands
Overall the entries are up on last year with a 6% increase.
Regionally the East Midlands was in 7th place slipping down one from last year with 59 entries representing a 9% decrease on last year which sadly was not a reflection on all the hard work which was collectively put in across the region. I have every confidence that our region will produce a high number of potential winners! We will undertake work to determine the critical success factors for this year on those regions that did better so we can build our position for success in 2011.

Academy Training Gives Business Room to Grow
A data management company has established its own academy to train staff for NHS projects.
Avoca Systems Ltd provides information management systems solutions to the healthcare sector. The company has an illustrious portfolio; it created the largest ever national online analysis service for the National Health Service and has been chosen to provide solutions for the world's largest civil IT project, the NHS National Programme for IT.
However, the growth of Avoca as a business has been limited by the availability of qualified staff to run their systems. These operators are hard to find because of years of underinvestment by the NHS in informatics (the practice of information processing, and the engineering of information systems). The company was finding it extremely difficult to recruit staff with the depth and breadth of specific knowledge needed.
Avoca's solution was to create a Health Informatics Training Academy in 2005. This unique programme takes trainees with the right aptitude but no prior experience of the industry. They are trained at a fast pace to take on leading roles within healthcare informatics projects for the NHS. Typically these trainees are university graduates but the academy now appeals to a much wider audience.
